Thorntree News & Events 2016-2017
On Tuesday 13th September the whole school celebrated Roald Dahl Day. There was a special assembly about the author and his books. The children did wordsearches and crosswords. In the afternoon each class watched a Roald Dahl film and were given a Dahl-themed cupcake too.
On Wednesday 14th September we had an Ofsted inspection.
On Friday 16th September Year 4 went on a trip to the Heritage Centre as part of their Tudor topic.
On Friday 23rd September we held our annual Jeans for Genes day. We raised £375 for this charity. This money will pay for a child to spend a weekend away with others with a similar condition, supported by trained medical staff.
We have received £500 from the Councillor's Ward Budget to improve the small triangle of land at the corner of Thorntree Road and Coxmount Road. The children are working on this plot. They have cleared the rubbish away and have removed the weeds.
On Tuesday 27th September Year 5 went on a trip to the British Museum.
Dyslexia Awareness Week took place during the week of 3rd-7th October.
We gained a new Chair of the Friends of Thorntree Association, Mr Mark Owen. A huge thank you to the previous Chair, Mr Paul Chapman for all the events he organised during his tenure.
On Tuesday 11th October we held our annual Harvest Festival Assemblies for both the Infant and for the Junior classes.
On Friday 14th October Year 6 children helped deliver our Harvest Hampers to local elderly neighbours.
On Wednesday 19th October our morning Nursery class visited the Maryon Wilson Animal Park.
On Monday 31st October our Year 2 & 5 classes has Fire Safety sessions.
On Tuesday 1st November Year 2 went on a trip to visit the Museum of London and St Paul's Cathedral.
On Friday 4th November we held the annual Halloween Discos for Years 1,2 & 3 and for Years 4, 5 & 6. There were some truly amazing costumes and a pumpkin competition. The children had great fun and we raised £402.30 towards improving the playgrounds.
The Brilliant Club (6 children from Years 5 & 6) visited Wadham college, Oxford.
Year 2 represented the school at the Charlton War Memorial.
Week beginning 14th November was Anti-Bullying Week.
On Friday 18th November, the afternoon Nursery Class went on a trip to the Animal Park.
Week beginning 21st November was Road Safety week.
On Monday 21st November Year 5 went on a trip to the National Maritime Museum.
On Monday 28th November Year 2 went to see a re-enactment of the Chrismtas story called "The Christmas Journey" at St Alfege's.
On Tuesday 6th December, the Choir went to sing songs at the Carolathon in Eltham to raise funds for the Demelza Hospice.
On Thursday 15th December Year 6 went to a Cross Country competition at Long Lane.
On Monday 12th December we held Christmas parties for the Nursery children.
On Tuesday 13th November the Nursery and Infants classes performed their Nativity play.
On Tuesday 13th December Year 6 went to sing a the Charlton Care Home.
On Wednesday 14th December the children had their traditional Christmas dinner.
On Thursday 8th December Year 4 went to a Cross Country competition at Long Lane.
On Friday 16th December we held our annual Christmas Fayre. There were craft stalls, games and refreshments galore... and, of course, Father Christmas himself.
On Monday 19th December we held Christmas parties for all the Infant and Junior classes.
On Monday 19th December Miss Fenwick opened the new wooden stage area in the upper playground. The ribbons were cut by the Deputy Head, Ms Walker. The new stage area comprises a brand new Story Telling Chair which was purchased using the funds raised by Connor in Year 5.
On Tuesday 20th December the Junior classes held their annual Christmas Carol concert at St Thomas' Church, Charlton. This year our chosen charity is the Neuro Foundation which helps families who have a family member suffering from Neurofibromatosis.
On Friday 6th January Year 6 visited the Woolwich Garrison.
On Friday 13th January FOTA held a post-Christmas cake sale with a white elephant stall. We raised £389.
On Thursday 19th January the Thorntree Choir had a wonderful evening performing at the Young Voices Concert at the O2. They were amongst 7,000 children and sang their hearts out.
On Tuesday 31st January Years 4, 5 and 6 had sessions with a folk singer learning to sing sea shanties.
Year 4 finished their Philosophy For Children lessons. Year 5 began their lessons.
The Brilliant Club - some children from Year 5 & 6 took part in a study group with a PhD scholar from Oxford University. This was a joint project with Cherry Orchard. The launch was at Wadham College in Oxford. The children then had six tutorials on Renaissance Art, with Dr. Manya Pagiavla, during last term. They then had to write individual 1000 word essays which were marked as if taking a degree. They all passed, some with flying colours, and were presented with their certificates up at King’s College on Saturday 28th January. We were very proud of them.
On 1st February, Year 5 went on their annual three-day residential trip to outdoor adventure centre called Arethusa (near Rochester). They went swimming and canoeing. They did wall climbing and high beams. They swung through the air to do the "Leap of Faith". They had a campfire and toasted marshmallows... and much more. All the children had an amazing time.
On Tuesday 7th February we held our Safer Internet Day.
On Thursday 9th February it was Streetdance Day.
On Friday 10th February, FOTA held their Vaelntine's Cake Sale and Bake Off competition. The competition cakes were all amazing. The Infant winner was Ella in the Recpetion class. The Junior winner was Ryshan in Year 3. The adult winner was Irina, mother of Sasha in Reception. All cakes were then sold and we raised £157.
On Thursday 2nd March it was World Book Day.
On Tuesday 21st March it was Sing Up Day for the whole school.
On Tuesday 21st March the Choir participated in a concert at St Thomas Moore school.
On Thursday 23rd March Year 1 went on a trip to Hall Place.
On Friday 24th March it was Red nose Day.
Om Monday 27th March we held our annual Easter Egg decorating competition and Egg Rolling competition. The Juniors watched an Easter play called "Easter Unwrapped".
On Tuesday 28th March we held our annual Easter assemblies and FOTA put on a cake sale, raising £165.
On Wednesday 29th March Year 3 went on a trip to the British Museum.
On Wednesday 29th March Years 1 and 5 went on trips to St Thomas' Church.
On Friday 31st March the children wore very imaginative hats for Wear A Hat Day to help raise funds for a brain tumour charity. They raised £412.
On Wednesday 3rd May Reception class visited our local library.
On Friday 12th May Reception class had a Forest School campfire in our woods.
Monday 15th May was the beginning of Walk to School Week.
On Tuesday 16th May Year 4 went on a trip to the Greenwich Heritage Centre to learn more about the Romans.
On Thursday 18th May, Glenn Tilbrook organised an amazing fundraising evening for the school at the Blackheath Concert Halls. He performed as well as his son Leon Tilbrook who performed four solo songs he had written himself. Glenn also performed with our school choir, Nine Below Zero and the Lewisham NHS choir.
22nd to 25th May was Science Week.
On Monday 22nd May Year 6 started their Bikeability sessions.
On Wednesday 24th May we had an astrodome planetarium in school.
On Thursday 25th May we held Greenpeace assemblies.
On Friday 26th May Year 3 went to the Greenwich Book Festival.
On Thursday 8th June the morning Nursery class went on a Stream Walk.
On Friday 9th June the afternoon Nursery class went on a Stream Walk.
12th to 15th June was our annual Book Week. Children dressed up as book characters, decorated their classroom doors, studied various authors and made book -related dioramas.
The Book Week Book Fair took an amazing £563.50 in sales and the school was given books to this value for our classrooms and Library.
On Tuesday 13th June we held our annual May Day celebrations. Miss Fenwick and Mrs Blayney crowned the May king and queen as they were retiring at the end of the summer term. All classes performed a range of traditional and modern dances.
On Tuesday 13th June we held a Summer Art Exhibition, displaying framed work by all the children.
On Tuesday 13th June FOTA held a May Day cake sale.
On Thursday 15th June the Nursery classes went on their annual seaside trip to Westbrook Bay.
On Friday 16th June FOTA held their annual Summer BBQ and talent show. It was a great success and the weather was beautiful.
On Friday 23rd June Year 4 participated in Sportathon.
On Friday 23rd June Year 6 went to Junior Citizenship.
On Tuesday 27th June Year 4 went on a trip to the Painted Hall in Greenwich.
On Wednesday 28th June the Infants held their annual sports day.
On Thursday 6th July the afternoon class went on a trip to the Thames Barrier.
On Friday 7th July the morning class went on a trip to the Thames Barrier.
On Friday 7th July the Year 2 went on their annual seaside trip to Westbrook Bay.
On Friday 7th July the Junior classes has their sports day in Maryon Park.
On Saturday 8th July FOTA organised the school's annual summer fair. The weather was great and there were stalls galore: bouncy castle, sumo wrestling, international foods, BBQ and drinks, bric-a-brac, numerous games and a performance by our Street Dancers.
