Thorntree News & Events 2017-2018
Four gorgeous new hens have moved in to the hen coop on the field. The ginger hen has been named Miss Henwick, the grey and white one is called Helen, the black one is called Midnight and the fluffy grey one has been named Fluffy.
During the 2017 summer holidays something very exciting was added to our school field… a Trim Trail. The adventure play equipment was purchased using funds donated by our departing Headteacher, Miss Fenwick, and the profits raised from our Breakfast Club. The children are loving playing on the new equipment. We hope to add to the adventure trail in the near future when we have raised sufficient funds.
On Friday 22nd September the children came in to school wearing their jeans to raise funds for Jeans For Genes day. They raised £193.05.
On Tuesday 26th September the Reception class went to Maryon Wilson Park to feed the animals.
The week 2nd-6th September was Dyslexia Awareness Week. We held a dedicated assembly, had a dyslexia-friendly book display in the Library, information around the school and specialised staff training.
On Monday 9th October 2017, Years 2, 3 and 4 enjoyed a captivating performance of Alice in Wonderland by M & M Theatrical Productions.
On Thursday 12th October we held our Infant and Junior Harvest assemblies. The produce that families brought in was then divided into hampers and given out to the community.
On Friday 13th October FOTA held their Autumn Cake Sale.
On Tuesday 17th October Year 4 went on a trip to the Woodlands Farm.
On Monday 30th October, Year 2 & 5 had fire safety talks.
On Tuesday 31st October the children got dressed up and came along to the annual Halloween Discos.
On Monday 4th December Year 5 went on a trip to the National Maritime Museum to learn more about the Vikings.
On Tuesday 5th December the School Choir went to sing at Demelza House.
On Thursday 7th December Reception class went to St Thomas' Church.
On Thursday 7th the School Choir went to the Care Home to give a Carol Concert.
On Monday 11th December, the Nursery classes had their Christmas party.
On Tuesday 12th December the Infant classes performed their Nativity Play for their parents and carers.
On Thursday 14th December the Junior classes held their annual Christmas Carol concert at St Thomas' Church.
On Friday 15th December the children wore Christmas jumpers for Christmas Jumper Day to raise funds for Save the Children.
On Friday 15th December FOTA held the school Christmas Fayre. This year it was expanded. Outside there were decorations and stalls, along with a hearty BBQ and mulled wine.
On Tuesday 19th December all years had the Christmas parties.
On Tuesday 30th January 2018, the Nursery and Infant classes enjoyed a lively performance of Jack and the Beanstalk by M & M Theatrical Productions.
On Wednesday 31st January the Choir participated in the Young Voices event at the O2.
On Tuesday 6th February the school did many activities for Safer Internet Day.
From Wednesday 7th to Friday 9th February Year 5 went on a residential trip to Arethusa. They did canoeing, swimming, climbing, high ropes, rocket building and much more. Everyone had a great time.
On Wednesday 28th February and Thursday 1st March Thorntree had to close due to heavy snow! The school grounds looked beautiful under the crisp white blanket of snow.
Week beginning 12th March was Brain Awareness Week.
Thursday 15th March was Sing Up! recording day. Each class prepared and sung a song which was recorded and will be turned into a CD.
On Monday 19th March Year 3 went on a trip to the British Museum.
On Friday 16th March children from Years 4, 5 & 6 participated in the John Roan Inter-School Book Quiz. The quiz was all about children's literature. The questions were very challenging and covered a very wide range of books. Our children were amazing... and Thorntree won the competition! As part of the of the prize we won some new books for the school and a trophy.
On Monday 28th March, all classes participated in the Easter Egg Decorating Event and the Egg Rolling competition.
On Thursday 29th April we held our annual Wear A Hat Day for the Brain Tumour charity.
On Thursday 17th May Year 4 went on a trip to Lullingstone Roman Villa.
On Thursday 7th June the morning Nursery Class went on a Stream Walk.
On Thursday 8th June the afternoon Nursery Class went on a Stream Walk.
On Tuesday 12th June we held our annual May Day celebrations. Year 3 were the centre of the event with a May Queen and May King. They did two traditional May Day dances using our May Pole. Other classes did a mixture of modern and traditional dances.
On Thursday 14th June FOTA held their annual summer BBQ. This was a lovely social event up on the field and was very well attended.
On Thursday 28th June the Nursery and Infant classes had their Sports Day.
In June the Reception playground got a brand new climbing frame.
On Saturday 7th July FOTA organised yet another amazing Summer Fayre. The theme this year was pirates. There were many pirate-themed games and activities. It was a beautiful sunny day and a very successful event.
On Thursday 12th July the Nursery went on a Gruffalo Trail.
On Friday 13th July the Junior classes had their annual Sports Day.
On Friday 13th July Year 2 went on their annual seaside trip.
On Wednesday 18th July we had a Zero Waste Picnic at the end of the day in the animal park across the road.
On Thursday 19th July Year 6 put on their end of year show for their families. They did the Rocky Horror Picture Show which was followed by a BBQ.
