Thorntree News & Events 2021-2022
Here are just some of the things that happened this school year:
On Thursday 4th September we welcomed back all our pupils.
During the week of 6th September we held Meet the Teacher sessions for parents and carers of children in all years.
On Thursday 16th September Year 6 held their first class assembly of the year. Parents and carers came in to witness some of the work and singing being done by Year 6.
On Friday 17th September our Computing Club began, children re-started The Daily Mile and it was Jeans for Genes Day. We raised over £122.
On Tuesday 21st September, Chicken Wired came in to work with Year 5. The children created sculptures made out of chicken wire and then added colour to them using various mediums. There were some amazing artistic creations.
On Thursday 23rd September, Year 5 held their first class assembly of the year.
On Thursday 30th September, Year 4 held their first class assembly of the year.
On 5th October Year 3 went to an event to the Maryon Park Event.
On Wednesday 6th October Year 1 went on a walk around our local area to tie in with their geography topic.
On October 7th Thorntree went to the Polls... to vote for School Council members.
On Saturday 9th October a group of staff and parents came in to tackle the vegetation that was growing from our woods through the fence. They worked really hard and got it all under control... with the help of some tea and bacon butties to spur them on.
On Wednesday 13th October Year 1 visited St Thomas' Church.
On Monday 18th October , Year 6 travelled to the London Buddhist Center in Bethnall Green as their topic this term was Budhism. They listened to an explanation of the origins and ethos of Budhism before having a short, secular meditation session.
On Thursday 21st October, the Friends of Thorntree organised an Autumn Cake Sale. There were some great homemade cakes. We raised £168.69.
On 21st October Key Stages 1 & s held their Harvest Festival assemblies.
On 22nd October Year 6 delivered Harvest parcels to elderly people in the local community.
All year groups have selected a charity they will be organising a fund raiser for during the course of the school year. Here are the organisations or causes that they are supporting: Reception – Greenwich Food Bank, Year 1 – Charlton Toy Library, Year 2 – Charlton Riding school for the Disabled, Year 3 – Maryon Park allotment, Year 4 – St Thomas’ Night Shelter, Year 5 – Woolwich Barnados, Year 6 – aid to go to families from Afghanistan.
On Friday 22nd October Year 1 organised ‘wear a silly hat’ day to raise funds for the Charlton Toy Library, a local charity helping disadvantaged local children.
On November 2nd we held the first Family Literacy sessions for parents of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.
On 3rd and 4th November we had our Ofsted Inspection. We were rated as a good school. Here are a couple of quotes: ... Pupils and adults in this school create a strong sense of family and community... Pupils like coming to school. They feel safe because they are well cared for by the adults around them... One cannot help but notice pupils’ and adults’ genuine joy of being in school. Pupils value the friendships they make at Thorntree... Leaders and staff know their pupils and families very well.

On Monday 8th November our Year 6 set off for their week-long residential trip to Condover Hall in Shropshire. The weather stayed fine and the children were able to take full advantage of all their activities and challenges. They enjoyed absailing, archery, archery tag, a high rope challenge, swimming, survival skills, shelter building, a leap of faith, laser tag, rocket launching, wall climbing, team challenges, a dance night and evening quizzes around the grounds, to name just a few.
On Friday 12th November it was Children in Need Day. Children dressed in their ‘own’ clothes that day and donated a £1.
During the week of November 15th children at Thorntree did lots of work and activities centred around creating good positive relationships with each other.
On Wednesday 24th November we held a Maths event for parents.
On 29th November the Road Safety awareness team came in to do workshops with Years 1- 6.
On 2nd December Year 2 went to St Thomas' Church.
On Friday 3rd December FOTA organised the annual Christmas Fayre. It was great for all concerned to be able to get together again. There was Santa's Grotto, numerous games & stalls, and refreshments galore. We raised £1,240.
On 6th December Year EYFS children and Year 1 went to St Thomas' Church.
On Thursday 9th December Key Stage 2 held their annual Carol Concert at St Thomas' Church.
On 10th December the children came in dressed in their own Christmas jumpers for Christmas Jumper Day.
On 14th December EYFS and Key Stage 1 children put on a performance of the Nativity.
Christmas parties were on 15th December.
On 2nd February the London Fire Brigade did a virtual visit for our children.
Safer Internet Day was on 8th February and classes did activities about being safe online.
Book Week was the week beginning 7th March. We had an author visit & workshops by Peter Bunzl (he wrote Cogheart) on Thursday 10th March and a Book Fair too for families to come along and purchase new books. On Friday 11th March children came in to school dressed as adventure characters from books.
On 9th March Reception and Key Stage 1 did a dance/drama workshop based on "Where the Wild Things Are".
During Neurodiversity week, on 15th March our KS2 children did an assembly on dyslexia, with parents present, explaining what it is and doing some role plays to illustrate how it affects children and ways to help deal with it.
Comic Relief Day was on Friday 18th March. The children had a non-uniform day.
On 23rd March Year 3 went on a visit to The Thames Barrier.
On 25th March FOTA organised the Thorntree Bake Off, followed by a sale of all the cakes and a mini fair with games and stalls. This year, the theme was cupcakes and there were some very imaginative, tasty bakes. A winner was chosen from each year... Nursery: Izabella, Reception: India, Year 1: Bradley, Year 2: Felix, Year 3: Dylan, Year 4: Poppie, Year 5: they were all so good that they all got a prize! We raised £325.70.
On Tuesday 29th March our Year 6 went on a trip to the Ecology Park. They learnt a lot about habitats & conservation and they did pond dipping. Despite the cold weather they all had a great day out.
On the same day, we held our annual egg decorating competition. Children brought in the eggs that they had decorated at home. There were eggs decorarted as the flags of Britiain, shops, trains, scenes such as shops and some very funny faces.
On Wednesday 30th March we held our annual Easter/Spring Assemblies. Parents & carers were welcome to come and watch.
On 31st March Years 2, 3 and 4 visited St Thomas' Church.
On Thursday 31st March we organised an Enrichment Afternoon where children were given free choice of a range of activities around the school, some sporty, some artistic.
On 1st April we held a Wear Yellow & Blue day with all proceeds going to organisations associated with the Ukraine.
On Thursday 5th May our choir participated in the Young Voices event at the O2 in Greenwich.
Also on 5th May our Year 5 went on a visit to the Migration Museum.
After much wedding in April, May saw the Year 1 / 2 gardening group begin to plant various vegetables and herbs in the allotment.
On Friday 10th June the school held celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Children made crowns, dressed in the fashions of the decades of the Queen's reign, played games, had a disco & music from across the decades and a huge Jubilee tea party.
On Tuesday 14th June Year 2 went on a trip to the Cutty Sark in Greenwich.
On Thursday 16th June we held our annual May Day festival. Year 3 were all dressed in traditional costumes and had a May Queen and a May King. They did a traditional Maypole dance, as did Year 4 and 5, who had missed this annual event due to Covid restrictions. All other years performed a country dance. There were also performances by the Choir and our Signing group.
After the May Day celebrations, FOTA organised the annual Summer BBQ. This was so well attended again. It was lovely to see the field covered with blankets upon which families sat, ate and chatted away.
On Saturday 9th July FOTA held their annual Summer Fair. The weather was amazing, the food very tasty and the playground buzzed with children and their families having a great time.
