Book Week

Every year we have a week-long celebration of authors and illustrators and reading in general with our amazing Book Week. A week full of competitions, fancy dress, author visits and much more!

During Book Week each class chooses a different author to study.

There are bookmark-designing competitions and quizzes, children write book reviews, classes join up in order to read together and staff read with different classes. The grand finale to the week is when everyone comes in to school dressed as their favourite book character. There is a huge assembly where the top three fancy-dress winners are chosen from each class. The children also decorate their class doors as a scene from their favourite book.

Thoughout the week (after school) we run a Book Fair. At the end of the week the school is able to select books for our classes and the Library, equivalent in value to whatever families have spent in total.

Past authors who have visited us during Book Week include:

  • Dick King-Smith – the film “Babe the Sheep Pig” was based on one of his books.
  • Alan Durant – he wrote “Henry’s Boots” and many other books too
  • Joshua Doder – he wrote the “Grk” series of stories.
  • Henry Nichols – a non-fiction author who wrote about George the gigantic tortoise in the Galapagos islands.
  • Ashleigh Rose – children’s football magazine journalist from 'Kick' magazine.
  • Andrew Donkin - a local author who writes children's  books and graphic novels.
  • Josh Lacey - who wrote the Grk and Dragonsitter books.
  • Penny Chrimes - who wrote Tiger Heart
  • James Allen - who wrote the picture book Spookasuarus

Book week is thoroughly enjoyed by both children and staff, and is a glorious celebration of everything to do with the writing and reading of books.
