Sports and Dance
Thorntree children participate in a wide variety of sports and sporting competitions, both within the school and outside.
We encourage as much physical activity as possible. We have a covered lockable bike shed in the playground of the main entrance to encourage children to cycle to school.
While at Thorntree, children learn sports such as hockey, tag rugby, netball, cross country running, rounders, cricket, sport stacking, tennis, athletics and orienteering. Children also have the opportunity to play football during play times and lunch time. Year 3 (term 3) and Year 4 (terms 1 & 2) have swimming lessons at the Waterfront swimming pool in Woolwich. Year 5 children have Bikeability training each year. Every year we hold our May Day celebrations in the playground where every class performs a dance. The Year 3 class leads May Day with two traditional Maypole dances.
We hold an annual Sports Day for the Nursery and Infants on our own school field and the Sports Day for Juniors is held in Maryon Wilson Park. Children participate in teams which are made up of children from all years. We celebrate team success as well as individual achievement. Thorntree offers several sports clubs eg. KS2 Football, KS1/2 ActivKids and KS1/2 Street Dance.
Thorntree pupils have competed in many cross-borough events including cross country, Streetdance, Dance Festival and Tag Rugby events.
We take part in the Big WOW (Walk on Wednesdays) event every year - a scheme to encourage more children to walk to school. We also take part in the annual Walking Bus event organized by BRAKE (the road safety charity), and, along with other schools across the country, the entire school goes out on a long walk around the local area to highlight the importance of physical exercise and road safety.
Thorntree pupils participate in numerous sporting and dance events. These include athletics events, Streetdance events, Sport Relief activities and a dance events at Thomas Tallis secondary school. Years 5 & 6 participate in the Greenwich Kwik Cricket finals. Year 4 go to the annual Greenwich Sportathon at the Royal Artillery Barracks. Year 6 go to a Sustrans Bike-It BMX event at the Hornfair Park BMX track. Sixteen Year 5 children attend our Bikeability course and Thorntree has gained the Bronze Sustrans Award for our commitment to cycling.
