Thorntree News and Events 2012-13

During the summer of 2012 we had a complete new boiler system installed, along with new radiators across the whole school.

On Friday 21st September our parents’ association held a welcome-back event called ‘Homecoming Hullaballoo’. The cake sale made  £128.91.

On Thursday 27th September Year 6 began their Taru Arts Green Chain project.

On Friday 29th September the Friends of Thorntree Association held another very successful Wine Tasting Evening.

During the week Monday 1st to Thursday 4th October Year 5 had Bikeability training.

On Friday 5th Octber we held events to raise funds for Jeans for Genes Day. We raised £200.

On Wednesday 10th October we held our Harvest Assemblies.

On Friday 12th October 15 large Harvest Hampers were delivered to local elderly neighbors.

During the week 15th-18th October we held parents’ meetings.

On Wednesday 24th October FOTA organised Halloween Discos for both the Infants and for the Juniors. There were some amazing costumes.

In November Mrs Hazel Greggains retired. Mrs Greggains had been a dedicated, hard-working and faithful member of staff at Thorntree for 23 years. Miss Jenny Carmen returned to us to take over the job-share in the Nursery.

On Thursday 8th November FOTA organized another very successful Christmas Craft Market.

On Friday 16th November Year 5 took part in a Charlton Schools Cluster Introduction to Karate/Dodgeball session at Thomas Tallis School.

Monday 19th - Friday 23rd November was Anti-Bullying Week. This year’s theme ass ‘We’re better without bullying’.

On Mon 19th November Year 4 went to the Royal Naval College in connection with their work on the Tudors.

On Tues 20th November Years 2 & 5 had Fire Safety talks, Year 1 went to Charlton Village and 20 cyclists went to an event at the BMX track.

On Wednesday 21st November Year 2 went to the National Portrait Gallery to the Samuel Pepys workshop.

On Friday 23rd November Year 4 went to Boccia sports event.

On Wednesday 28th November our KS1 Streetdancers performed at Pound Park school.

From Friday 30th – Wednesday 5th December we held a pre-Christmas Scholastic Book Fair. We received £120 worth of new books for our Library.

On Monday 3rd December Years 5 & 6 staged an instrument concert to all interested adults.

On Thursday 6th December Year 5 went on a trip to the Painted Hall in Greenwich (Pattern & Shape, Myths & Legends).

On Thursday 6th December FOTA held the annual Christmas Fayre.

On Tuesday 11th December Year 1 went on a trip to the Fire Station.

On Monday 17th December the Thorntree Choir performed some Christmas carols at the Charlton Care Home.

On Tuesday 18th December the Nursery & Infants performed their annual Nativity play.

On Wednesday 19th December the Junior classes held their annual Carols & Christmas Service at St Thomas’s Church in Maryon Road.

On Thursday 20th December all classes held their Christmas parties.

On Thursday 31st January, Year 1 went to the Heritage Museum.

In February, we raised £278 for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

On Thursday 14th February, FOTA held a Valentine's cake sale which raised £100.

On Monday 4th February, the Nursery children went over to Maryon Wilson Park to feed the animals.

On Wednesday 6th February, Year 2 went on a trip to the Tower of London.
 
On Tuesday 12th February, a group of girls from Years 5 & 6 participated in a football tournament.
 
On Wednesday 13th February, Thorntree children went to a Dance Festival at Thomas Tallis Secondary School.
 
From Tuesday 26th February to Friday 1st March, Year 5 went on the annual Wrotham trip. In spite of the cold weather they had a fantastic time.
 
On Friday 1st March the Bishop of Woolwich visited Thorntree.
 
Maths Week took place during the week of 4th-8th March.
 
For Comic Relief this year, the children dressed for the day and also held a Talent Show. It was a very entertaining show with the children showcasing some of their amazing musical and dance talents. We raised £200 for Comic Relief.
 
On Tuesday 19th March We had a visit from Andy Barrow. Andy is a Paralympic wheelchair rugby player and was part of Team GB in the 2012 Olympic Games. Andy talked to the children about his life, his chosen sport, his training and his participation in the Olympics.
 
Also on Tuesday 19th March, Year 3 sent on a trip to the London Eye.
 
On Wednesday 20th March, the Nursery classes went over to the animal park.
 
On 26th March a group of our Junior Streetdancers participated in an inclusive dance festival with other children from the Thomas Tallis Hearing Deaf Support Centre and from Willowdene school. The children all worked together and then performed in the evening at the Trinity Laban Centre.
 
During the last week of term, we had our annual Easter Assemblies as well as our Egg Decorating Competitions and our Egg Rolling Competition too. Our Easter Raffle raised £130.
 
On Tuesday 14th May, Year 3 went on a trip to the Heritage Centre.
 
On Wednesday 15th May, Year 4 went to visit the Mandir temple in Plumstead.
 
On Wednesday 22nd May we held our annual May Day event.
 
On Thursday 23rd May, Reception children had a Circus Skills day, learning new skills such as juggling, balancing, spinning plates and much more.
 
On Friday 7th June, we held our annual Summer BBQ, organised by our parent's assocaition, FOTA.
 
On Tuesday 11th June, the Nursery went over to the park to feed the animals.
 
During the week Monday 17th-Firday 21st June we held our annual Book Week. The children decorated their classroom doors, dressed up as book characters, made book marks, studied varied authors and much more. Our visiting author this year Andrew Donkin, a local author.
 
On Thursday 20th June some of our Year 5 & 6 children attended two Kwik Cricket tournaments.
 
On Thursday 27th June our Clarinetists joined the Bollywood Brass Ensemble. Also, Ms Waker's writing group went on a trip to the Globe Theatre in London.
 
Also this week we had some of our Year 3 & 4 children attending Greenwich Sportathon event.

During the week 1st-5th July Year 6 went on their annual residential trip to Swanage in Dorset.

On Friday 5th Jluy, Years 4 & 5 performed their own instrumental concert.

On Wednesday 3rd July we held our Nursery and Infants Sports Day.

On Wednesday 10th July, Nursery went on their annual seaside trip to Westbrook Bay.

On Thursday 11th July we held the Junior Sports Day.

On Saturday 13th July we held our annual Summer Fair.

 On Friday 19th July, Year 2 went on their annual seaside trip to Westbrook Bay.

On Monday 22nd July, Year 6 did a very professional performance of Oliver for their families, followed by a Leaver's BBQ.

This year saw the introduction of Stay and Play sessions in the Reception class and also the 'Family Literacy' sessions in Year 2. Both were well attended by parents and carers.
